UP Appalled by Developments in Nimba

first_imgThe Unity Party (UP) says it is appalled by the unfolding developments in Nimba County, which according to media reports have  disrupted the operations of ArcelorMittal at their Mount Tokadi site.According to the UP, the destruction of the company’s facilities, bridges and other critical pieces of infrastructure by hoodlums is a complete act of barbarity that must not go unpunished.“We are dismayed over this latest act of madness, especially at this critical period when our Government is exerting all efforts to attract the much-needed foreign Direct Investment (FDIs) to a county that had experienced some of the most devastating effects of the civil war.”The UP authorities have call for the speedy investigation of the violence and the prompt prosecution of those involved, they said. The Unity Party authorities call on the leaders of Nimba County to demonstrate “patriotism and truthfulness” by putting their sectarian politics aside as this matter is being investigated.“The leaders of the county should rise above their differences and other parochial interests and cooperate fully with central government as this shameful act is being investigated, this is an act of sabotage and therefore calls for a united front.”The UP authorities said, if the reports emanating from some quarters of Nimba County are true that the recent violence was “incited”, then this must be a serious cause for concern. There can be no justification for the wave and scale of wanton destruction witnessed in Nimba County.  We  believe this can achieve nothing other than destruction, they stressed.“We look anxiously forward to the speedy investigation of the violence within the concessions area of ArcelorMittal and the attending devastating consequences.“We urge the citizens and leaders of the communities affected to be true ambassadors of peace by exposing those responsible for this level of madness.”The UP further urged the residents of the affected communities and their leaders to beware of the setback that destructive conduct and actions have caused.“The perpetrators of the violence must bear the full responsibility for any further delays in the implementation of provisions of the Mineral Development Agreements (MDA), since the company will now be constrained to restore the facilities that you have so wantonly destroyed.”    The UP leaders urged the management of ArcelorMittal to immediately halt any further payment of compensation and or benefits to the residents of the affected communities until at such time as all claims are evaluated, verified and validated and the identities of the beneficiaries authenticated. Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Zidane a ‘disgrace’ over Bale exit comments

first_img0Shares0000Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane is a disgrace for his treatment of Gareth Bale, says the Welshman’s agent © AFP / AARON M. SPRECHERLOS ANGELES, United States, Jul 21 – Gareth Bale’s agent has branded Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane a “disgrace” after the Frenchman revealed that the La Liga giants were ready to offload the Wales star in a matter of days.Zidane left Bale out of the Real squad for Saturday’s 3-1 exhibition loss to Bayern Munich in Houston, and after the match he revealed he had been dropped because the club were “working on his departure”, adding that he hoped it happens soon, “for everyone’s sake”. “Zidane is a disgrace, he shows no respect for a player that has done so much for Real Madrid,” Bale’s agent Jonathan Barnett told AFP.Asked whether Bale is close to leaving Madrid, Barnett added: “We are working on it”.Bale has been frozen out in Madrid by Zidane despite helping his side to a Spanish title and four Champions Leagues since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur six year ago.His brace, including a brilliant bicycle kick, sank Liverpool in the 2018 final, but he was shunted aside by Zidane as soon as he returned to the Real bench in early March. After Zidane’s reappointment, Bale played 90 minutes in just three of the remaining 11 matches, was left out completely four times and frequently substituted when he did play.He was denied a chance to say goodbye at the end of last season when he was left on the bench in a 2-0 loss to Real Betis that saw Zidane’s side submerged with boos and whistles. However Zidane insists that his treatment of the 30-year-old forward “is nothing personal”, even though Bale would be welcome at some of Europe’s biggest clubs.“There comes a time when things are done because they need to be done,” Zidane added after the Bayern defeat.“I’ve not got anything against him. We have to make decisions and change things, that’s all there is to it.“I don’t know if this will happen in 24 or 48 hours’ time. The situation will change and it’s for the best for everyone.”Bale joined Real Madrid to much fanfare, a blockbuster transfer fee and a big salary that may prove to be an obstacle for all but the richest teams. He has three seasons left on his deal and has been linked to Tottenham, Manchester United and Bayern.0Shares0000(Visited 4 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

first_img Steve Evans 1 Rotherham United have parted company with manager Steve Evans.Evans had been in the job for three-and-a-half years, leading the Millers to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship. He penned a new contract only last summer and went on to guide the club to safety in the Championship. But he has now departed his post nine games into the new campaign, along with assistant Paul Raynor, with the club stating both parties “wished to head in a different direction”.Evans leaves Rotherham on the back of an impressive 2-0 win at Birmingham, which moved them up to 20th in the table.First-team coach Eric Black has been appointed interim boss while the club search for a permanent replacement.A club statement read: “Following a meeting between the chairman and manager (on Monday) morning it was decided Rotherham United Football Club would part company with first-team manager Steve Evans and his assistant Paul Raynor.“During the said meeting it became clear that both parties at the present time wished to head in a different direction.“The meeting was at all times positive, constructive and straightforward. LVG:’I have the full confidence of my board and my players’

first_imgLouis van Gaal has dismissed reports of dressing room unrest at Manchester United. The Dutchman has found himself under heavy fire from fans, with United without a win in five games and having endured an early Champions League exit last week. There have been various reports in this week’s newspapers that Van Gaal’s ‘rigid approach’ has led to discontent among the senior players. But when asked if the chemistry between him and his players was fine, Van Gaal insisted: “Yes, it’s fine – but I’ve said that already more than once.“I have seen articles that it’s not like that. It’s a bit crazy I think, but that is this world.”Van Gaal saw his former prodigy Jose Mourinho axed by Chelsea on Thursday. He appears confident he will not follow the Portuguese’s lead, but accepts that United must get back to winning ways.“I have the full confidence of my board and my players, I feel,” he said.“But we have to get results. We have to win, and we know that – the players know it, I know it and my staff know it.“We have to win because when you lose too much, also for me it’s the end of the world.”United have drawn four of their last six home games 0-0 and some United fans have been voicing their frustration at matches with boos and shouts of “attack, attack, attack”.Asked about that disgruntlement and whether he felt the supporters were still with him, Van Gaal said: “It’s always like that when you lose.“The board of directors can see what you can do as a manger in practice but the fans cannot see that, so when you lose you need the belief of the fans, and that is a question for the fans not the manager to answer.” Louis van Gaal 1last_img read more

`Side Order of Life’ show for men, too, star asserts

first_imgDiana-Maria Riva may star in the comedy-drama “Side Order of Life” on the Lifetime channel, but she wants to make one thing clear: “This ain’t your mama’s Lifetime anymore, and you don’t have to check your manliness at the door. You can come in and watch it.”Lifetime for years had marketed itself as “television for women,” but has gradually broadened its scope with shows like “Life,” in which Diana-Maria plays Vivy, a breast cancer survivor whose journey serves as a wake-up for those around her – especially best friend Jenny, played by Marisa Coughlan.“It’s a wonderful role,” Diana-Maria told me recently. “She’s a vibrant, brash woman who, a week before her best friend is to marry (the character played by) Jason Priestley, she tells her best friend: ‘I have cancer and you’re marrying the wrong guy.’ So she takes the opportunity to shake everybody else up and says, ‘Listen to my ticking clock. You may have one, too.’”The busy 38-year-old actress took on “Life” after doing years of network television, beginning with recurring roles on “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch,” “Common Law” and “City of Angels,” a cast member of the one-season dramas “Philly” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” and playing a recurring role on the final season of “The West Wing.” “There’s definitely a certain amount of freedom you have when you’re on a cable show,” she said. “The level of steam is much higher. We have the liberty to play with all those areas, whether it be language or sex or the soap-opera end.”Playing Vivy on “Life” has been a career gift: “It’s one of the first times we’ve seen a character on television who hasn’t been diagnosed, treated and cured from cancer in a very special episode. This is for the long haul, showing how cancer survivors are living, thriving human beings.”Since the show began airing, Diana-Maria said she has been hearing a lot from real-life cancer survivors.“I have never been more moved – except when I gave birth. They are fueling me; they are my fire. They’re letting me know what’s realistic, what’s not – real simple things, like trying to keep a wig on your head when you’re trying to have sex, things the common man wouldn’t think about. All we think is ‘Cancer: Are they dying?’ It’s about the little things in life that count.“There are 10 million survivors in this country.” And about the whole “is this only a show for women?” stuff, Diana-Maria said men do not have to be afraid.“My husband is all man, and he watches it and enjoys it – and my daddy, too. When you have men like Jason Priestley and Chris Garten on this show, there’s nothing excluding about it. Everyone can watch it. It’s a good show.”Duhamel of ‘Las Vegas’engaged to singer FergieJust call him The Duke. On fourth day, Pitchess rioting spreads to third jail

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORESanta Anita opens winter meet Saturday with loaded card In what appeared to be a domino effect, the first confrontation occurred at 12:15 p.m., involving 123 inmates in one dormitory. An emergency response team from the Sheriff’s Department responded, using tear gas and sting-ball ammunition to break up the fighting. A second fight, involving 109 inmates in another dormitory, broke out at 12:55 p.m., followed by a third involving 112 inmates in another dormitory at 1:08 p.m. and a fourth at 1:20 p.m., involving 108 inmates. Pena credited the close proximity of the response team for the short duration of the four incidents. “When you’re in jail, and some of these guys have been in and out of jail a lot, you know when something is going on,” he said. “We don’t know if it was planned this way to spread our resources thin.” The North Facility and the North County Correctional Facility, also on the grounds of Pitchess, had been in lockdown Wednesday because of earlier violence. Lockdown means inmates’ movements and privileges such as phone calls are restricted. On Tuesday, officials said they were hoping to re-integrate the jails today, a decision that was pending. “We’re trying to avoid segregating the inmates by race,” Pena said. “It depends on the intelligence we gather from the inmates. Whether (segregation) happens or not is a decision way above my pay scale.” Pena said that it was a distinct possibility that communication from outside gangs might have provoked the racial conflicts. Detectives from the sheriff’s Safe Jails and Safe Streets programs, specially trained in gang intervention and mediation techniques, were interviewing some of the inmates involved late Wednesday afternoon. The incident was the fourth in a series of disturbances at the center. On Saturday, fighting among more than 2,000 black and Latino inmates broke out in the North County Correctional Facility, resulting in the death of one inmate and injuries to 46 inmates. Sunday night, 180 inmates in another NCCF dorm fought, leaving eight injured. Monday night, seven inmates in the North Facility were injured when fighting broke out in two dormitories. CASTAIC – A third Castaic jail erupted in violence Wednesday as more than 450 inmates split along racial lines and battled, leaving 19 men injured, Sheriff’s Department officials said. One inmate suffered a serious head injury and was taken by ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, three others were hospitalized with less serious injuries and 15 were treated at the Pitchess Detention Center jail complex by county paramedics. No personnel were hurt. The rioting marked the fourth day of black-versus-Latino brawling at Pitchess, which left one inmate dead and resulted in the segregation of inmates at several county jails. Wednesday’s fighting was in the East Facility, the county’s oldest operating lockup and one of the few jails in the county system where inmates had not been segregated. Of those injured Wednesday, 13 were black and six were Latino. The East Facility, which has a capacity for 1,900, was housing 1,405 inmates, said sheriff’s Deputy Richard Pena, a Sheriff’s Department spokesman. last_img read more

Stoke have ‘no plans to sell’ Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, insists chairman

first_imgStoke have “no plans” to sell winger Xherdan Shaqiri in this transfer window, according to chairman Peter Coates. The 25-year-old Switzerland international has been linked with a move to Roma as a replacement for Liverpool-bound Mohamed Salah.Shaqiri has shown flashes of the ability that prompted the Potters to pay £12million for his services in 2015, but he has also delivered inconsistent performances and suffered from numerous niggling injuries during his two years in Staffordshire. However, Coates is adamant that the former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan man is happy at Stoke and is confident he can play a big part in the forthcoming campaign. When asked about a possible enquiry from Roma, Coates told the Stoke Sentinel: “No, there is nothing in that.“There are no plans to sell him either. He seems very settled with us and towards the end of the season he came back [from injury] and did well.“We are settled with him, too, and are hoping to see a good season from him next season.” 1 Stoke star Xherdan Shaqiri last_img read more
