World Cupwinner Jofra Archer in England squad for Ashes opener

first_imgLondon: Uncapped fast bowler Jofra Archer has been included in England’s 14-man squad announced Saturday for next week’s Ashes opener against Australia, with all-rounder Ben Stokes re-appointed as vice-captain. The pair both enjoyed starring roles in England’s stunning World Cup final win over New Zealand at Lord’s on July 14, with all-rounder Stokes ensuring England drew level with the Black Caps total in regulation play before Archer bowled the decisive Super Over that sealed victory. Archer, 24, who only became England qualified earlier this year, could now make his Test debut when the first of a five-match series starts at Edgbaston on August 1. Meanwhile Stokes was restored to his position as Joe Root’s deputy after being stripped of the vice-captaincy following a late night brawl in September 2017. He was subsequently cleared on a charge of affray last year, with Jos Buttler acting as vice-captain. Both Buttler and Stokes were rested from a see-saw Test against Ireland that England eventually won by 143 runs at Lord’s on Friday, with veteran spearhead James Anderson also returning to the squad after missing the match with a side injury. BlackBerry Ltd lays off 120 Waterloo staff as part of planned cost

BlackBerry has laid off 120 employees in its product development and wireless technology divisions as part of an ongoing cost-cutting plan, the company said Monday. The reductions were centred at its headquarters in Waterloo, Ont., where most of its staff are based. The move is part of a plan announced last year to lower expenses, partly through the elimination of about 40% of the company’s workforce.“BlackBerry is working hard to return to profitability and we continue to optimize our resources to meet our mandatory operational targets,” the company said in a statement.“We recognize our local employees’ hard work on behalf of our company and the difficulty of this news.”BlackBerry has also been looking for other ways to lower costs and squeeze more money from assets as the smartphone maker tries to reposition itself with business customers. In December, the company sold a handful of buildings to the University of Waterloo for $41-million under an agreement that would allow the company to lease back some of them for up to five years.Earlier this month, BlackBerry sold its U.S. headquarters in Irving, Texas, to Brookfield Property Group for an undisclosed amount. The company plans to lease back at least part of the six-building location.Blackberry is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter and full-year results March 28.The company’s shares closed down 19 cents at $10.13 Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The Canadian Press read more

PHOTOS Protests at Marie Stopes Belfast clinic

first_imgBETWEEN 200 AND 300 people protested against the opening of a Marie Stopes clinic on Belfast’s Great Victoria Street this morning.Pro-life group Precious Life organised the demonstration ahead of the noon opening of the sexual health clinic which will provide medical abortions to women in line with Northern Ireland’s legislation.Other services on offer at the centre include emergency contraception, HIV testing, STI treatment and ultrasound scanning.Northern Irish law only permits abortion up to nine weeks in order to preserve the life of the mother, or if continuing with the pregnancy will result in serious risks to the physical or mental health of the mother.Marie Stopes International asked pro-choice groups not to organise any counter-protests. The organisation suggested supporters should use social and traditional media to show solidarity.Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s Health Minister, Edwin Poots, said that the clinic will be monitored and regulated, and he is seeking advice on how to do this.last_img read more

Apple Sued Over Dropped iPhone

first_imgRemember glassgate? We covered it back in October of last year. It was something of a less successful sequel to the much more widely covered antennaegate. Glassgate, essentially, surrounded the ease with which the glass on the phone cracked. The story as we covered it back then, involved the rear glass on the device. When dirt or other particles worked their way in between the iPhone 4 and a case, scratches led to a shattered phone.Glassgate is rearing its ugly ahead again, this time in the form of a class action lawsuit. Donal LeBuhn, a California resident, filed the suit after his daughter dropped the phone from three feet, shattering it, despite the presence of a protective bumper (a result, no doubt, of the aforementioned antennaegate)–and despite Apple’s claims that the material on the phone is “ultradurable” and “the same kind used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains.”LeBuhn took the phone to a non-Apple repair shop to save $50, voiding the warranty in the processes. The irritated iPhone owner is suing for attorney’s fees, monetary damages, and to force apple to replace damage glass and refund the cost of replacement.last_img read more

VPNs Are Not the CureAll They Seem to Be

first_img This VPN and Firewall Combo Keeps Your Browsing Under Wraps for Just $30Get Over 95 Percent Off Lifetime Subscription to Fastest VPN So a lot of you are probably a little concerned (and rightfully so) about some upcoming non-shifts in internet privacy laws. And if you haven’t heard, in essence, Trump and pals decided to repeal a law that would have prevented Internet Service Providers from selling your private information. Because the US government is… well… a little authoritarian as of late, that’s left a bunch of folks wondering how they can protect themselves. And the main answer a lot of people are pushing — Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs — aren’t really the optimal solution many think.VPNs actually have some pretty major downsides. For starters, they aren’t always… well… safe. In recent years, VPNs have been the tools of eager pirates. You might not have noticed, depending on your browsing habits, but piracy has become MUCH harder. Many torrenting sites have shut down and the ones that are left, like Piratebay, are shadows of their former selves. Part of that is because government and corporate crackdowns have pushed many to the fringes. Now, a good chunk of piracy is either from a streaming website or via private networks that pirates maintain themselves. That shift has meant there’s a lot less public support and guidance for new pirates, making incoming newbies prime targets for scams. It’s easy to spook people into thinking they’ll need a VPN or risk an arrest (that’s true, but only kinda), and, without prior experience, many will buy subscribe to a VPN service without doing a lot of research. That’s just as dangerous, if not worse than letting your ISP gather data and auction it off. With your ISP, you at least know generally who you’re dealing with. Comcast will watch you (which is stupid and awful and they should be disgusted with themselves) and then probably sell your data to Sears or some other floundering business that’s desperate to find new ways to connect with customers. Yeah, it’s shitty, but it’s not profoundly shittier than most things. Loss of privacy is an unfortunate reality for most of us in the modern era. Those folks running that sketchy VPN service, though, could be anyone. And they could be looking at every bit of data you send and using it to break into your accounts or steal your identity. Plus, with all the buzz about VPNs now, you can expect more and more scammers to crop up.There are tons of other downsides to VPNs too, namely that they will almost always reduce your speed and many services like Netflix won’t let you watch movies if you’re behind one. And these are all things you should be thinking carefully about before you sign-up.The good news is that VPNs can be fantastic if you use the right ones and know when they’re appropriate and when they aren’t. Many come with toggles so you can switch back anytime you’d like. This helps avoid the Netflix issue, but also means that some bot somewhere is probably watching you. Beyond that, it’s a matter of knowing which ones are reputable and which aren’t, combined with being a bit more vigilant in general. Not everyone has the time, and certainly not the money to do that, though, and those people aren’t going to have too many good options. This administration is flat determined to usher in a cyberpunk dystopia, which means poor people and anyone that isn’t amenable to having their rights constantly trampled isn’t going to have a good time. Our sister site, PC Mag has some excellent guidance for picking out the right VPN service for you, and we’d strongly recommend giving their list a read if you decide this is a route you want to go. Otherwise… nothing will change really. ISPs have been collecting your information and selling it for a while now. This is the world we live in now. Have fun.If you are searching for the best VPN services our sister site PC Mag has given Private Internet Access VPN and NordVPN top ratings. Friends mourn Rainier hiker who showed us the way

first_imgSEATTLE — Friends on Sunday mourned a well-known outdoors writer and photographer who had been missing for three days in Mount Rainier National Park before searchers said they recovered a body of a woman. The National Park Service said it will be up to the Pierce County medical examiner to confirm that the body found Saturday afternoon was that of 70-year-old Karen Sykes of Seattle. It was discovered in an area where searchers were looking for Sykes, and they ended the three-day rescue effort after finding it.“For a lot of local hikers, it’s an extreme loss,” said Greg Johnston, who edited a “Trail of the Week” column she wrote for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “For decades, she showed us the way, and now that’s gone.”Sykes was prominent in the Northwest hiking community for her trail reviews and photographs, for her book on hiking western Washington and for leading group outings. Friends said she found sanctuary in the wilderness.“It was a real healing thing for her,” Johnston said. “Once she found hiking, she never stopped.”She had been hiking with her boyfriend, Bob Morthorst, on Wednesday in the Owyhigh Lakes area east of Rainier’s 14,410-foot summit when they encountered snow on the trail at about 5,000 feet. He stopped and she went on, friends and park officials said.last_img read more

Local Jews prepare for Rosh Hashana

first_imgLet’s hope for a sweet, healthy, prosperous year. That’s the meaning of challah, the traditional braided bread that’s enjoyed by Jews on every Sabbath and on holidays like Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year.Sundown today marks the start of the year 5775 in the ancient Hebrew lunar calendar. Last week, Clark County’s orthodox Chabad Jewish Center held a workshop at the Vancouver Community Library for anyone who wanted to learn the hows and whys behind challah and Rosh Hashana, a little ahead of time.“It was a good opportunity to remind the community and get them involved in the traditions of the holiday,” said Rabbi Shmulik Greenberg, the leader of Chabad.Traditional challah is made of eggs, white flour, water, sugar, yeast and salt — no butter or milk — plus optional sweeteners like raisins, poppy seeds, sugar and cinnamon. It’s usually long and braided on Sabbath observances, but on Rosh Hashana it’s made round to “symbolize the cycle of the year,” Greenberg said. “Every year’s seasons and holidays repeat themselves, and the New Year is a reminder of this cycle of life. At the same time, we also remind ourselves that this year we will aim for change,” he said. “Yes, the same cycle, but on a personal level we each aim that our efforts will make for an even better, more productive year.”last_img read more

A Simple Bracelet Can Turn Your Arm Into an Interactive Smartphone Display

first_img Smartphone addicts will want to pay close attention to this.Say, for example, you’re taking a shower or relaxing in a hot bath. Your smartphone is nowhere near your wet, soapy hands. Just then an important email comes in. You either have to ignore the message until you’re done or prematurely have to jump out and dry off. Not fun. Not convenient. The inventors of something called Cicret (pronounced “secret”) want to change that. With the simple flick of your wrist, the Cicret bracelet can project your smartphone’s display onto your forearm. Your arm essentially becomes a fully interactive display — a swipeable, touch-sensitive, full-color one that allows you to read and send emails, get directions, you name it.Related: A Watch That Shoots Lasers? Yes, Please. And it’s apparently water-proof, too.Sound too good to be true? Check out the video to get a look for yourself:See? With Cicret on your wrist, you’d never lose touch with your precious smartphone again. Your phone fix would be skin deep.Related: Want a New Smartwatch? Hold On. Why Not a Smart Ring Instead? Basically, Cicret lets you do everything you do on your phone on your forearm, palm up or palm down, depending on which way you wear it. Per Cicret’s website, you can rock it to “Read your emails, play your favorite games, answer your calls, check the weather, find your way…Do whatever you want on your arm.”How it works isn’t, well, much of a Cicret, er, secret. The promo video explains that the snap-on device works its magic using an embedded system that includes one mini projector, one microprocessor and eight long-range proximity sensors. It’s also packed with lots of other geeky goodies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, “vibrator,” micro USB port, battery, LED light components. Oh, and it comes in either 16-GB or 32-GB, and in 10 fun colors.  Also in the promo clip, the bracelet appears to be activated in a quick flick of the wrist. The smooth move instantly lights up a projection of a nearby Bluetooth-paired smartphone (notably an Android), illuminating several inches along the user’s wrist. Pretty bright idea, eh?Related: Gold? Silver? Pffft. This Necklace Is Pure Illumination. The one thing you can’t do unfortunately is get one right now. Cicret is still only in prototype mode. Soul crushing as that is, you can’t even pre-order one yet, either.Cicret’s Paris-based developers say they still need to raise about $1.2 million dollars to make the project a reality. They’re opting for their own PayPal fundraising campaign, forgoing trendy crowdfunding on Kickstarter and on Indiegogo. They recently failed to fund an ephemeral, Snapchat-like messaging app on the latter, ponying up a mere $15 of their $50,000 goal. Let’s hope it’s not a bad omen for their brilliant wearable offering.A beta version of the free app, simply called Cicret, is, however, available on Google Play. We’re guessing they want you to use it on their wristlet, you know, when you’re not busy taking a call in tub. Two questions remain: Does it work under water? And how much will one cost?Related: A Wearable Women Want to Wear? Behind Intel’s New Smart Bracelet. Mammography exams are conducted during a 15-minute appointment. Hou said these exams are typically read within a few days, and that “most women will have a normal screening exam.” If the exam is abnormal in any way, the hospital will reach out to the patient to come back for a diagnostic workup. Diagnostic exams at the hospital consist of a follow-up mammogram concurrent with ultrasound imaging. If necessary, the hospital also offers on-site biopsy services. If deemed appropriate, the team at the High-Risk Breast Clinic will make arrangements for genetic testing, medications and consultation regarding prophylactic surgery. They will also coordinate with the patient’s primary care provider throughout the process to ensure smooth transitions and compliance with medical recommendations. Patients deemed moderate- to high-risk are offered ongoing management and surveillance at the clinic. This includes services like education on proper breast checks and modifiable risk factors such as diet, exercise, tobacco and alcohol use. The clinic also offers social work and emotional support services to help patients and their families handle the realities of cancer care. “They can sit down with somebody to really discuss, ‘Am I at risk and what should I be doing?’ ” said Hou.A year into the endeavor, she believes the clinic has helped find and treat more cancers, but perhaps more importantly, helped patients better understand and take control of their health. Breast Density and Patient EducationHou noted that patients are coming in with more knowledge of their health — or at least more questions — than in the past. Many of their questions revolve around fibroglandular breast density, a cancer risk factor that has come to the forefront of women’s health conversations in recent years. If a woman has dense fibroglandular breast tissue it can obscure tumors on a 2-D mammogram, as the tumor and the dense tissue both appear white on the image. Prior to 2009, facilities were not required to disclose information about breast density to patients, and the consensus among providers was that telling patients would do more harm than good by increasing anxiety. In 2009, states started passing individual breast density inform laws requiring some level of information in a woman’s mammography report if she was found to have dense breast tissue. Today, 34 states have density inform laws on the books. The increased awareness of issues like fibroglandular breast density has augmented the importance of supplemental modalities like ABUS and DBT.Illinois does not have a breast density inform law (although bills were introduced in the state House and Senate in February 2018), but patient education is still a priority at Northwestern Medicine CDH. Hou said the hospital does inform women in their mammography reports if they have dense tissue and could benefit from supplemental screening. They have also worked to ensure that their network of referring physicians and primary care providers are knowledgeable about the options available to their patients. “We really try to help patients understand in the venues that we’re able to, and their doctors, about understanding that [dense breast tissue is] not a bad thing, it’s just the way it is,” Hou said. She added that consistency is an important consideration as well — they wanted to have someplace that referring physicians could send their patients and ensure that patients would have their own specialist that they could see regularly. Feature | Women’s Health | June 05, 2018 | By Jeff Zagoudis High-Risk Clinic Arms Patients Against Breast Cancer High-Risk Breast Clinic goes above and beyond to help patients understand and manage their health Image courtesy of Imago Systems Benefits vs. Harms of Breast Cancer ScreeningThe frequency of mammography screening has become a contentious topic in recent years, largely due to the most recent updates to screening recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), an independent, volunteer panel of experts in evidence-based medicine. In 2009, the Task Force recommended against routine mammography screening for women ages 40-49 with a grade of “C”, a controversial stance among healthcare providers. Instead, the Task Force stated that women under age 50 should decide with their doctor whether biennial screening would be appropriate. The USPSTF also recommended biennial screening mammograms for women between the ages of 50 and 74, with a “B” recommendation.1 The task force finalized these recommendations in 2016.USPSTF grades are based on a review of the indicated preventive service, balancing the harms and benefits of the service. One of the harms most often associated with breast cancer screening is the risk of overdiagnosis. A 2017 study out of Denmark found that breast cancer screening in that country was associated with a substantial increase in the incidence of nonadvanced tumors and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but not with a reduction in the incidence of advanced tumors. The researchers concluded that “it is likely that one in every three invasive tumors and cases of DCIS diagnosed in women offered screening represent overdiagnosis,” an incidence increase of 48.3 percent.2 An American study published last June in the New England Journal of Medicine reached similar conclusions, finding that screening tended to overdiagnose small, slow-growing tumors, particularly in older patients.3Hou also noted that many women are fearful of the radiation associated with mammograms. “But truly with mammography there’s very little risk,” said Hou. “It’s overblown in a lot of people’s minds. But again, it’s something we want to be mindful of.” References 1. U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Screening for Breast Cancer: U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Recommendation Statement. Clinical studies have proved the effectiveness of newer technologies like automated breast ultrasound (ABUS), digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in finding more cancers that traditional mammograms might miss as well as interval cancers that develop between screenings. While the benefits of these and other supplemental screening methods have been demonstrated, a multimodality approach is not necessarily the best one for every woman. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all, it never has been in a lot of ways,” said Karen Hou, M.D., diagnostic radiologist at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) in Winfield, Ill. To ensure that every woman gets the appropriate level of care she deserves, Hou and her colleagues at the CDH Breast Health Center opened the CDH High-Risk Breast Clinic in 2017.    News | Mammography | August 14, 2019 Imago Systems Announces Collaboration With Mayo Clinic for Breast Imaging Image visualization company Imago Systems announced it has signed a know-how license with Mayo Clinic. You have to make a decision ‘I’m going to use this as a screening tool,’ ” she said.Ultimately, the decision should come down to what is best for the patient. “We want to be applying the best technology in the most appropriate way that will benefit people the most. What we’ve done is try to use some logic along with what is most accessible for people and what we could do to best serve them,” Hou concluded. Individualizing Breast Cancer ScreeningTaking this approach of weighing benefits against harms, the High-Risk Clinic — which operates at CDH and nearby Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital — is designed to identify individuals at higher risk of breast cancer who may benefit from additional screening. The clinic’s website indicates that high-risk assessment is reserved for women who meet any of the following criteria:•    Multiple family members with breast and/or ovarian cancer;•    First-degree relative (mother, father, sister, daughter) with a diagnosis of breast and/or ovarian cancer;•    Breast biopsy with pathology showing atypical cells or lobular carcinoma in situ;•    Have a known genetic mutation that increases the risk of developing breast cancer; and/or•    History of prior chest radiation therapy. Malaysia climber says lucky to live as quake kills 13

One survivor said she waited for a rescue helicopter that never came.A magnitude-5.9 earthquake on Friday sent rocks and boulders raining down the trekking routes on 4,095-meter (13,435-foot) -high Mount Kinabalu in eastern Sabah state on Borneo island. New Valley school lets students pick career-path academies About 60 rescuers and four helicopters were combing the mountain, where loose rocks and boulders that fell during the quake blocked part of the main route. The quake also damaged roads and buildings, including schools and a hospital on Sabah’s west coast. It also broke one of the twin rock formations on the mountain known as the “Donkey’s Ears.”The mountain will be closed for three weeks for maintenance work, and flags will be flown at half-staff in Sabah on Monday to mourn the victims.Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan blamed the tragedy on a group of 10 foreigners who “showed disrespect to the sacred mountain” by posing naked at the peak last week. He said a special ritual would be conducted later to “appease the mountain spirit.”The foreigners, who included two Canadians, two Dutch and a German national, broke away from their entourage and stripped naked before taking photos at the mountain peak on May 30, officials have said.Five of the tourists are believed to still be in Malaysia and will be barred from leaving on the offense of gross indecency, according to police.Copyright © The Associated Press. So we all chose to try walking down ourselves.”She said she saw two bodies lying on a flat rock on the way down. “It really affected me as it could have been me. I was lucky to be given a chance to live,” she said. She said that the descent was “very risky and we were all starving, dehydrated and tired but at least we tried saving ourselves.”The two dead retrieved Friday evening were a 30-year-old local guide and a 12-year-old Singaporean student, Farhan said.Police said earlier Saturday that they were looking for 17 other people, including eight Singaporeans and one each from China, the Philippines and Japan. The rest are Malaysians. The nationalities of the 11 dead recovered Saturday were not immediately clear.last_img read more

Famils

first_imgFamils Byron Cruise & Travel’s Jessica Milford had a close encounter with a friendly camel after a 4WD joinery across Wahiba Sands to 1000 Nights Camp, when she travelled to Oman on an exclusive Travellers Choice famil, hosted by Peregrine Adventures and Etihad Airways.“When we got there I decided to take a selfie with a camel and before I knew it he came right up behind me and licked half my arm and half my face,” said Jessica of the event she cites as ‘a highlight’! It wasn’t the only memorable moment on the famil, which saw seven Travellers Choice members experience Peregrine’s ‘Taste of Oman’ tour. With a local leader, the agents wove their way through bazaars and souks, visited spectacular mosques, toured Oman’s forts, took a sunset cruise along Muscat’s coast, and swam in the crystal clear waters of the tranquil oasis, Wadi Bani Khaled.Less authentically Arabian, but just as entertaining, says Jess Black from Capricorn Travel in Perth, was Autobahn, one of the city’s more unusual nightclubs.“It is a wonderfully tacky car-themed bar at Al Falaj Hotel in Muscat, which has a painted road running through the middle and guests sit in a white stretch limo which has been converted into booths,” says Jess. The agents also experienced Etihad’s award-winning business class, spent a night at the luxurious St Regis Abu Dhabi and took the controls of a flight simulator at the EY Training Academy.Image:Travellers Choice members storm Niswa Fort, Oman.
