Zidane, Madrid under fire after ‘inexplicable’ defeat

first_imgJust days after Zinedine Zidane signed a new contract until 2020, serious questions are being asked of the Frenchman’s ability to turn things around after two trophy-laden years in charge.Real have picked up just one point from their last three league games and have won only once in five, form that leaves them fourth in the table, 16 points behind leaders Barcelona, who go to Real Sociedad on Sunday.“No goals, no luck and no explanation,” said sports daily AS on their front page.“Everything is going wrong,” wrote editor Alfredo Relano in his column. “This result sinks Madrid further into the sombre mood that has invaded everyone, including Zidane.”If they had already all but given up on any hope of retaining the league title even before Saturday’s game, there are now even concerns that they could miss out on a top-four spot altogether.Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane reacts during the Spanish league match against Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid on January 13, 2018 © AFP / Gabriel BOUYSReal are eight points behind third-placed Valencia, who were 2-1 winners at Deportivo on Saturday. They are also only one point clear of Villarreal in fifth — not since 2004 have they finished outside the top three in La Liga.In Barcelona, the Catalan press seized the chance to stick the knife in.“In crisis”, headlined Mundo Deportivo below a picture of Cristiano Ronaldo, on the ground with his head in his hands.Sport focused on the troubles in front of goal of Ronaldo, who missed numerous chances at the Santiago Bernabeu before Pablo Fornals’ magnificent late winner for Villarreal, their first ever victory there.Ronaldo has just four league goals this season, while Gareth Bale is struggling for fitness and form and Karim Benzema has been injured. The previously feared ‘BBC’ no longer carries the same aura.“The white collapse is basically the collapse of Cristiano and, by extension, that of the whole ‘BBC’, a trident that died months ago now without anyone having realised,” wrote Sport editor Ernest Folch.Relano added: “Madrid started to fall behind because Cristiano was missing; then, because when he came back the goals were not going in; in the end, because the gap at the top provoked a disenchantment that shows.”Zidane is “an elegant coach but has no answers on the blackboard,” according to Folch. There is a danger that his position could become untenable if Madrid — the two-time defending European champions — lose to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16, the first leg of which will be played at the Bernabeu on February 14.Frederic Hermel, Madrid-based correspondent for French sports daily L’Equipe, noted that Zidane “still doesn’t appear prepared to make any changes to his team, despite another defeat… (that) leaves a feeling of powerlessness.”0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Villarreal midfielder Pablo Fornals (C) celebrates after scoring during the Spanish league football match against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid on January 13, 2018 © AFP / Gabriel BOUYSMADRID, Spain, Jan 14 – The Spanish press did not hold back in their criticism of a “shattered” Real Madrid, a team “in crisis” after their 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Villarreal in La Liga.“Inexplicable” was the front-page headline on Madrid sports daily Marca on Sunday, which remarked that the reigning Spanish and European champions “don’t know what is happening to them” in La Liga.last_img read more

LVG targets £45m England star, secret Pep meeting and more United news

first_img John Stones is top of the list – John Stones remains Van Gaal’s top target, having had Manchester United scouts at every Everton game this season to watch his progress. The club are now fully convinced he is a future United player and are willing to table a £45m offer for the England central defender. However, United will have to battle Chelsea for his signature with the Blues set to reignite their interest in the summer. Interest in Felipe Anderson ‘cooling’ – Van Gaal’s interest in Lazio’s Felipe Anderson has reportedly cooled after his dip in form in recent weeks. Anderson’s attitude has worsened as he has tried to force through the move but Lazio’s asking price is thought to be the main thing putting the Red Devils off the move for the winger. All major transfers cancelled, or are they? Click the arrow, right, to see more Manchester United rumours – Manchester United have put all of their major transfers on hold due to increasing speculation surrounding Van Gaal’s future at Old Trafford. Reports earlier in the week suggested the Dutchman would leave in the summer, cutting his three-year contract short by a year. As a result they will commit to any transfers until Champions League football is confirmed. 5 United trial for 15-year-old goalkeeper – United have taken 15-year-old goalkeeper Bartosz Mrozek on trial from Lech Poznan and will spend a few days being put through his steps by the coaches at Carrington. The club had been following his progress for 12 months before making a formal approach in December. Manchester United are still yet to sign any mid-season reinforcements, despite a season full of criticism and indifferent form.Goals are still few and far between but an improved performance against Newcastle followed up with a crowd pleasing 1-0 win against Liverpool last weekend has relieved some of the pressure on Louis van Gaal. However, while his position seems safe for the moment, whether or not he will be in the Old Trafford hotseat next season is a different matter.Click the arrow above, right, to see the latest rumours and reports about the future of Van Gaal and any possible new recruits. 5 Secret Pep Guardiola meeting – Van Gaal’s future has been cast into further doubt with reports emerging from France that Manchester United officials had been spotted in Paris for a secret meeting with Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola. The club have officially denied these rumours, however it is unlikely they will give up on their pursuit of the former Barcelona boss until an announcement about his future is made. 5 5 5last_img read more

R2bn oil terminal for port of Saldanha

first_img5 September 2013 German company Oiltanking GmbH has entered a joint venture with a number of local companies to build a commercial crude oil storage and blending terminal at the port of Saldanha on South Africa’s south-western coast. Business Day reported on Thursday that it would cost R2-billion to build the crude oil terminal, which will comprise 12 giant concrete tanks each capable of holding 1.1-million barrels of crude, translating to a total capacity of 13.2-million barrels. The new terminal will be built “as state-of-the-art facility in accordance with the highest technical, operational and environmental standards,” with a jetty designed to handle vessels up to VLCC (very large crude carrier) size, Oiltanking said in a statement on Wednesday. The port of Saldanha was an excellent location for a crude oil hub, the company said, “as it is close to strategic tanker routes from key oil-producing regions to major oil-consuming markets”. Ideally situated for the blending of west African and South American crude oils, Saldanha “has the potential to establish itself as a global crude transhipment hub focused on certain established trade routes,” the company added. Africa Oil & Gas executive director Pieter Coetzee told Business Day that the terminal would be one of the largest oil blending facilities in the world and the largest in Africa. The development, construction, management and operation of the terminal will be carried out by a new company called Oiltanking MOGS Saldanha (OTMS). Half of OTMS will be owned by Mining, Oil and Gas Services (MOGS), a subsidiary of South African company Royal Bafokeng Holdings. MOGS initiated the terminal project in 2011, has since completed the pre-feasibility studies and design, and is in the final stages of obtaining the required statutory approvals. The other half of OTMS will be owned by Oiltanking Grindrod Calulo Holdings (OTGC), a subsidiary of Oiltanking GmbH. According to Oiltanking, OTGC is an independent bulk liquid storage provider in South Africa “which combines the world-class expertise of Oiltanking GmbH in the field of bulk liquids handling with the local expertise and the full black economic empowerment credentials of Grindrod South Africa (Pty) Ltd and Calulo Terminals (Pty) Ltd.” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Spotify Co-Founder: Notion of Overnight Success “Misleading and Harmful”

first_img9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Related Posts In a surprisingly candid post on Spotify’s blog, company co-founder Daniel Ek recently shared his thoughts about where the popular streaming music company stands today and where he hopes it can go in the future. The main point of his post was to clarify that Spotify, despite being a media darling these days, is nowhere near becoming a sustainable company with a stable revenue model. However, that’s their end goal, Ek says, and they’re in it “for the long haul” with no intention of simply “flipping” the company after the hype reaches its crescendo. But in the meantime, the company struggles with the exorbitant per-play fees enforced by the music industry while not finding success with an ad-supported model. Don’t Count on Overnight SuccessAccording to Ek, the notion of overnight success is “very misleading and actually rather harmful to any hope for long term and sustainable growth in this industry.” Despite this fact, he calls out the music industry for doing just that and expecting to see business models proven “within months of inception.”  That’s just not how it works, he says, reminding us how iTunes was not initially the powerhouse it is today. In its first year, the company missed its revenue targets by 30% and most label executives doubted its staying power at the time. While Ek realizes that comparing iTunes to Spotify is wrong given the very different business models for each company, it does prove the overall point: success in this industry takes time.Spotify, which is currently hugely popular in Europe, has yet to launch in the U.S. due to contract negotiations over licensing agreements. However, as popular as the service is, it still has a long way to go in terms of both product and monetization. Ek acknowledges that one thing which needs to be addressed is how difficult it is for Spotify users to actually buy the music they’re listening to. Yet despite the fact that nearly 80% of the company’s users are unaware that they can purchase the tunes they’re hearing, Spotify is still one of the biggest affiliates to music downloads. Another challenge facing the company is how to earn a profit considering the large costs of licensing the music it plays… especially when reliant on an ad-supported model. (Spotify offers multiple service levels, one being ad-supported. It also offers subscriptions.) Earlier this year, another streaming service, Last.fm, had to do away with its ad-supported model for the same reason. The Music Industry Needs to ChangeIf it was up to Spotify, the music industry would be embracing the future instead of constantly fighting against it. Ek says that in order for the industry to find success, it needs to realize that the new business model is “a mix between ad-supported music, downloads, subscriptions, merchandising and ticketing where the user comes first and where the key to monetization comes from portability and packaging access rights.” If willing to adapt, the music industry could then have the potential to become a $40-50 billion industry and one that could grow stronger than it ever was. Until that time, it looks like Spotify has a long road ahead of it, but it’s good to know that it is up for the challenge. “We aren’t interested in just trying to hype the company and then flipping it,” Ek says. “We are in this for the long haul.” Tags:#music#news#NYT#web 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnoutcenter_img sarah perez 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…last_img read more
