TNT management blasts Narvasa: ‘He is biased’

Photo by Tristan Tamayo/INQUIRER.netBreaking its silence, the TNT management blasted PBA commissioner Chito Narvasa, following Narvasa’s claims that the franchise was involved in the controversial trade between San Miguel Beer and Kia.Team manager Virgil Villavicencio released a statement on Sunday, clarified the squad’s involvement in the deal.ADVERTISEMENT Marvin Lee ‘frustrated, pressured’ as UST nears winless season Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC The team executive called out Narvasa for using TNT as a scapegoat for the approval of the deal, which sent Kia’s number one pick, which turned out to be Standhardinger, to San Miguel in exchange for Ronald Tubid, JayR Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy, and the Beermen’s 2019 first round pick.READ: PBA approves Kia-San Miguel trade “We resented his statement as it is uncalled for. Why did he have to use us to justify his decision?,” the statement read. “In addition, any team has the right to see what trades would make sense for them regardless of players thrown into the equation. His decision robs the PBA of the dynamism, excitement, and suspense that a player of Christian Standhardinger’s caliber would bring going up against Fajardo.”The PBA Board of Governors had earlier stated that it would support whatever Narvasa’s decision would be on the transaction.READ: PBA Board to back Narvasa on controversial SMB-Kia tradeHowever, Villavicencio expressed his lack of confidence on the commissioner following his approval of the trade.“If the commissioner does not see this simple perspective, he may not be the right person for the job. London Olympics: Flop shows in London add to the woes of Indian weightlifting

first_imgOne of the biggest slumps in Indian sport has been in weightlifting. For two days in a row, it has been a case of Indian weightlifters turning in flop shows, with Katalu Ravi Kumar unable to come near the medal bracket on Tuesday. Even before leaving India, there were doubts over Ravi’s fitness and he came up with the excuse of fever on Tuesday after finishing sixth at the Excel Arena.Competing in the 69-kg category, Ravi totalled 303 kg in snatch, clean and jerk. He had a 136 kg lift in snatch and then 167 in clean and jerk. The Indian had attempted 141 twice in snatch, but could not register a legitimate effort. In snatch and jerk, after a 167, he went for 176 kg and again failed to achieve the target.Gold went to powerful Kim Myok Hong of North Korea. He had a good snatch of 145 and then in clean and jerk, without too much effort, he did 184 kg for an aggregate of 329 kg as the hall thundered with applause.Silver went to Venezuela’s Junior Antonio Sanchez Rivero as he totalled 328 kg (148 kg in snatch and 180 in clean and jerk). Sardar Hasanov of Azerbaijan had to be content with the bronze medal.Coming back to Ravi, who is employed by the Indian Army, he had been unsure of his fitness before coming here. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist was in fact in decent form when he sealed a berth for the Olympics with a good performance at the Asian championships.A day earlier, Soniya Chanu also did not do well in her category.advertisementFor long, Indian weightlifting has been under the scanner for the wrong reasons. Twelve years ago, when Karnam Malleswari surprised the world with a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, talk was if she could inspire a whole generation. What happened instead was disaster as in the Athens Olympics in 2004 as women lifters were found to be on dope and were thrown out of the Athletes Village even before the Games began.Dope offences in Indian weightlifting have been frequent and the federation had to pay a huge fine in 2010 to secure a return to the international fold. However, despite all these lessons, the sport has not improved. If Malleswari had won a medal in 2000, it was due to foreign coach Leonid Taranenko helping her out.But the sad reality now is that after Magad Slamma left India, no international coach wants to come and help our lifters.Unless there is a corrective measure at home, the sport of weightlifting will die an unnatural death in India.last_img read more

Crew goalkeeper making voice heard on field

In soccer, the goalkeeper is like a coach on the field. “Part of being a goalkeeper is barking out orders and you’ve got to be louder than everyone,” Columbus Crew goalkeeper William Hesmer said. He is in charge of directing the team’s defense and setting up its offense with goal kicks and throws. Hesmer, now in his fifth season as the Crew’s starting goalkeeper, is off to a hot start in 2011. Through 10 games, he is allowing an average of only one goal per contest and has had four shutouts, putting him on pace to break his career high of 10. “That’s a reflection of the team,” he said of his performance so far. “For the most part, we have done a terrific job of team-defending and making it difficult for other teams to break us down.” After losing several key players in the offseason, such as defender Frankie Hejduk and offensive maestro Guillermo Barros Schelotto, coach Robert Warzycha said Hesmer has increased his role as a team leader. “Losing so many players from last year, he is one of the guys that is leading the team,” Warzycha said. “His good performance is very important to us.” As successful as Hesmer and the Crew defense have been so far, the offense has struggled during the first two months of the season. Columbus is in last place in the MLS in scoring, averaging 0.8 goals per game. Strong performances by Hesmer and Co. during the first month and a half of the season, including a streak of four straight shutouts, made up for the team’s offensive struggles. The Crew recorded a seven-game streak without a loss from March 26 to May 7. At that point, the team had 13 points and was tied for fifth in the 18-team league. However, the team has gone goalless in its past two matches and has yet to win a game in May. It fell into a tie for 10th place in the league. Warzycha said there’s one thing his team needs to do: score goals. “It is as simple as that,” he said. The Crew will look to rebound against Chivas USA at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at home. read more

Grindrs Chinese ownership a national security risk US government reportedly says

first_img1:54 Share your voice 0 Following its sale to Kunlun last year, Grindr released a public statement preempting user distrust of the app’s new owners. “Nothing changes with how we will protect your personal information,” the company noted.”CNIUS’s action shows a commendable awareness of the fact that big data is not just a matter of privacy, but also a matter of antitrust,” Guido Noto La Diega, senior lecturer in cyber law at Northumbria University, said to CNET in an email. ” I agree that Grindr’s acquisition from a Chinese tech group exposes the LGBTQ dating app’s users to some privacy and security risks, in light of Chinese laws on security, cybersecurity, and audio-visual content.”This said, however, one could argue that the move to force Grindr’s sale is not necessarily motivated by actual security and privacy concerns, since Trump has been pushing to strengthen intelligence programs that allow surveillance of targets abroad.”The reported move follows the US’ systematic blockading of Huawei over similar national security firms. Huawei is known to most for its dazzling phones, but it’s also in the telecommunications business. The US fears that Huawei, if commissioned to build internet infrastructure in the US, could purposefully create security flaws which the Chinese government could at some point take advantage of.Originally published March 27.Update, March 28: Adds comment from Guido Noto La Diega.  Border security: Tech options that could replace a wall Leon Neal/Getty Images LGBTQ dating app Grindr was bought last year by a Chinese gaming company called Beijing Kunlun. The US government considers the deal a national security risk and is pressuring Kunlun to sell, according to a Reuters report.Kunlun fully acquired the California-based Grindr app in January of last year for an estimated $152 million after buying an initial $93 million stake in 2016, reported TechCrunch. However, neither of these transactions was cleared with the Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS), according to Reuters.CFIUS has told Kunlun that its ownership of Grindr equates to a US national security risk, the report adds. CFIUS did not immediately respond to CNET’s request for comment. Grindr declined to comment. The specific manner in which Kunlun’s ownership constitutes a national security threat wasn’t explained in the report. However, Grindr said last year it had 3.8 million daily users from “every country in the world,” presumably excluding countries it’s banned in, and 27 million users in total. Those users’ data could be seen as a honeypot for unsavoury actors.center_img Now playing: Watch this: Tags Post a comment Mobile Tech Industrylast_img read more
