first_imgLeicester boss Claude Puel hails unity for Chelsea shockby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveLeicester City boss Claude Puel hailed their unity for victory at Chelsea.Jamie Vardy scored the only goal of the game early in the second half.“We played this game with confidence and the right mentality away at Chelsea, a good team with great players,” Puel said at full-time.“In this game, we played with a fantastic togetherness. Perhaps in the first half, we were disappointed because we could have used the ball with more quality.“We wasted some good opportunities in the first half but our togetherness and our defensive aspect was fantastic. We scored a goal with a fantastic move and I was happy for Jamie.“It was a clinical goal and fantastic service from Maddy [James Maddison] also. We continued to defend like a team with 11 players with the mentality to keep this result.”That togetherness – which saw all players put their bodies on the line to defend in the latter moments – was the most pleasing factor for Puel to reflect on in his post-match assessment.“It’s a fantastic reward for the team because we managed this game very well,” Puel added. “We were a little lucky in the end when they hit the post, but I am happy for the players.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

first_imgUriel Antuna scored a hat-trick as Mexico thrashed Cuba 7-0 in their CONCACAF Gold Cup opener in California on Saturday.Antuna stole the show with his treble, which went with a Raul Jimenez brace and goals from Diego Reyes and Alexis Vega in what was a one-sided encounter at the Rose Bowl.Gerardo Martino’s men struck four times in the first half, marking their fifth win in as many games since he took over in January. Cuba were outclassed by a Mexico side who showed why they are once again among the favourites for the title.Mexico dominated from the outset and needed just two minutes to open the scoring through Antuna, who was a late addition to the Mexico squad as an injury replacement.Jimenez hit the post after a cross from the left and Antuna was on hand to scramble in his first international goal.Mexico’s second just after the half-hour mark through Jimenez had been coming as the forward caused Cuba plenty of problems.Andres Guardado chipped a pass through a poor Cuba defence, Jimenez producing a composed finish into the bottom corner.Mexico struck twice more before half-time through Reyes and Antuna. @Diego_Reyes13@Raul_Jimenez9 #GoldCup2019 | #FMFporNuestroFútbol pic.twitter.com/3B1arTLdcE— Selección Nacional (@miseleccionmx) June 16, 2019Jimenez side-footed a corner that drew a save from Cuba goalkeeper Sandy Sanchez, but the rebound fell straight to Reyes to tap in.Antuna completed his brace just prior to the break as Jimenez’s cross was blocked by a last-ditch clearance, the LA Galaxy forward – who is on loan from Manchester City – on hand to rifle into the roof of the net from close range.#2T MEX 4-0 CUB1, 2, 3… ¡Luz verde! ¡Arranca la parte complementaria! ¡Hay que seguir con todo! #GoldCup2019 | #FMFporNuestroFútbol pic.twitter.com/JEspk0QD06— Selección Nacional (@miseleccionmx) June 16, 2019Mexico’s intensity dropped slightly to begin the second half, but Jimenez struck again, firing through Sanchez’s legs after a pass from Carlos Rodriguez.Vega came off the bench to net his first at international level, tapping in after Antuna unselfishly crossed for him to score the easiest of goals in the 74th minute. In just his third international, Antuna completed his hat-trick, putting away a rebound after Sanchez did well to keep out a Rodriguez effort. What does it mean? Mexico flex muscleThis was meant to be a one-sided affair and Mexico ensured it was with a blistering first half. McGinn ‘had a little chuckle’ at Manchester United links

first_imgJohn McGinn may have been linked to Manchester United this summer, but the Aston Villa midfielder says he “had a little chuckle” at the reports before getting back to work. Having helped bring Villa back to the top flight, it was said that Sir Alex Ferguson was pushing the Old Trafford club to make a move for the midfielder. But McGinn landed a new five-year deal with Villa on Thursday ahead of the new season, and claims he was happy to continue his growth at his current club.  Article continues below Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? “I had a little chuckle at it to be honest,” McGinn told Sky Sports. “I’m sure a lot of people did.”It is up to me to go and prove it is justified. At that point, my whole mindset was on Villa and being successful here.”I have still got so much left to learn and prove.”In the environment here I am appreciated. I’m loved and respected by everyone – there is no better feeling. I still have to pinch myself driving in.”I feel like one of the main players here but I still need to improve and get better.”To have any speculation lingering about isn’t what you want.”I’m just glad to be settled and to focus on the next five years.”Villa’s Premier League campaign will get underway on Saturday against Spurs. But with a remade squad that features 12 new players, including record signing Wesley, even McGinn isn’t ready to make predictions on how their return to the top flight will play out.  Wesley Moraes Aston Villa 2019“I am not sure,” he said. “There are a lot of new signings. “A lot of boys have had to get their visas and stuff sorted, get used to the cuisine in Birmingham and the temperature. It took me seven months to get used to it. “They are nice lads, no egos, I think that is important, with Villa being in the Premier League. “Speaking to some of the experienced boys they all say Villa had a reputation for bad characters and big egos. “I don’t think we have that now. “It is an important trait to have for a hard-working club. I think they have recruited well in that sense.”last_img read more

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum Predicts The Winner Of Auburn-LSU

first_imgA General view of Auburn's stadium.AUBURN, AL – SEPTEMBER 20: A general view from high in the stadium as the LSU Tigers take on the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium on September 20, 2008 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Doug Benc/Getty Images)Auburn and LSU are set to highlight college football’s Week 3 slate today. The two Tigers are set to meet at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Alabama later this afternoon. It’s one of the biggest games of Week 3, with the two undefeated, top 15 teams meeting in a pivotal early-season SEC game.ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum had said earlier this week that the loser of this Auburn-LSU game is probably “done” in the SEC West race.“It’s really important because, if you lose the game on either side, you’re done,” Finebaum said during an appearance on ESPN’s First Take this week. “Because you still have to play Alabama in your league. You still have to play Mississippi State, which is good. They went on the road and beat Kansas State, which isn’t a bad win. You don’t survive this and have much of a chance unless you start knocking people off.”It’s not a ridiculous thought. The SEC West is obviously stacked, with No. 1 Alabama at the top, and an early-season loss would really hurt.Finebaum recently appeared on ESPN and made his winner prediction.“I think Auburn is going to win comfortably,” Finebaum said on SportsCenter.Auburn is a sizable, double-digit favorite. Not many analysts seem to be picking LSU.Who are you picking?Auburn and LSU are set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. E.T. The game will be on CBS.last_img read more

(Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)No major college football coaches have been fired – yet. However, the “hot seat” lists are starting to really heat up as we enter the second month of the season.Friday night’s game between Louisville and Georgia Tech has one fan base calling for is head coach to be fired.Cardinals’ fans, who witnessed their team suffer a blowout loss to the Yellow Jackets on Friday night, appear to be done with Bobby Petrino. The 57-year-old head coach has had some success at Louisville, though the Cardinals are off to a 2-4 start this season.Unfortunately for some Louisville fans, Petrino’s massive buyout could make a change difficult.Appears to be strong consensus among #Louisville fans that Bobby Petrino should be replaced. Don’t see anyone ready to write the $13 million check, however.— Tim Sullivan (@TimSullivan714) October 6, 2018Petrino’s contract situation is a weird one, though. The program would actually owe him more money if they fire him in 2019. So, it’s possible Louisville could decide to bite the bullet this season.Stay tuned.last_img read more
